Abstract

Background: Workplace mental health is increasingly recognized as central to employee performance, yet is frequently neglected, with implications extending beyond the individual to overall organizational functioning. Objective: To examine the impact of neglected employee mental health on individual performance and organizational outcomes, and to identify strategic approaches for addressing it. Methods: Narrative review synthesizing existing literature on workplace mental health, employee productivity, and organizational outcomes at both individual and organizational levels. Results: Neglecting employee mental health was associated with decreased productivity and engagement, increased absenteeism and presenteeism, impaired decision-making, and strained interpersonal dynamics. At the organizational level, effects extended to cultural erosion, rising healthcare costs, talent retention difficulties, and stagnated innovation. Conclusion: Proactively addressing workplace mental health through awareness promotion, supportive policies and programs, leadership training, and fostering a positive work environment is both a compassionate and strategically necessary investment for sustaining organizational performance and longevity.
