Abstract

Background: Examinations are central to evaluating academic performance, but their influence extends beyond assessment of knowledge, shaping students' stress levels, coping mechanisms, and broader approaches to learning. Objective: To examine the relationship between examinations and student behavior, including associated challenges such as anxiety and competition, and opportunities such as resilience-building, and to consider evolving assessment approaches. Methods: Narrative review synthesizing existing literature on examination-related stress and anxiety, coping mechanisms, competition and academic integrity, teacher-student dynamics, resilience and adaptability, and alternative assessment methods. Results: Examinations were associated with heightened anxiety and competitive pressure among students, but also fostered the development of resilience and adaptability. The review identified evolving assessment methods and their potential to support long-term learning over exam-centric approaches, along with implications for teacher-student dynamics and academic integrity. Conclusion: Examinations present both challenges and opportunities for student development. A balanced, holistic approach to assessment incorporating alternative methods and supporting resilience is needed to mitigate negative impacts while preserving the benefits of examinations for learning.
